Paradise Grove was built in the 1930's, expanded in the 1940's, and subject to extensive renovations in 2004. The property was originally part of the Military Reserve and was deeded to the Harbour and Dock Company in the mid 1800's. Surrounded by old-growth trees and spacious gardens, easy access to the Niagara Parkway, and within a short walk of everything that matters in the Old Town district, Paradise Grove is indeed the best located B&B in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

On the border of the Military Reserve and the Town of Newark, the property was not developed until about 1856, well after Fort George was abandoned. As part of the harbour development project in the mid 1800's, the land was given by the government to the Harbour and Dock Company. After the Harbour and Doc Company became insolvent, the property was sold to the Milloy family who built a three storey home on the hill overlooking the harbour, where Chateau Gardens nursing home is now located. In the 1930's the Harrison family, who owned a local lumber yard, acquired the property and built a number of additional structures, including a small house at the corner of Byron and Wellington streets. The local oldtimers tell a story that Jack Harrison drove the delivery truck for his father's lumber yard and allegedly skimmed a few pieces of lumber from each delivery, dumping the "appropriated" lumber on the property as he drove by. Jack then supposedly, according to this story, built or had built the large addition to the small house on a part-time basis. Some of the older residents that knew Jack call it "the house that Jack built". Jack is long dead, so who knows whether the oldtimers' story is true, false, or some version of the truth. It is but an interesting tale. The two storey house at the corner of Byron and Wellington was built in the colonial style. Jack Harrison used the balloon-framing method, which was pretty common for houses built during that period. Instead of constructing one floor and then the next, with balloon-framing, the outside eighteen foot wall studs spanned both the main and second floors, and the joists for both ceilings were held up using studs coming down from the 12-pitch roof joists. With normal construction you would need interior supporting walls to hold up 2 x 8 ceiling joists spanning the twenty feet between the exterior walls. With balloon construction, the interior "supporting walls" were just long studs from the roof joists down to the joists of the second floor. The balloon-framing provided quite a challenge in our reorganizing of the second floor to provide three good sized bedrooms. Jack Harrison, who owned most of the block after his father died, sold off the north-west third of an acre and existing house in 1969 to Elizabeth Ayers, the grandaughter of Bessie and Clarence Kraft (part of the cheese family). Elizabeth and her second husband, Allan Peets, made extensive renovations to the house. A number of Niagara-on-the-Lake residents were shocked when Elizabeth had the exterior siding painted yellow. That seems silly now, but back in the 70's all the houses that were not brick were pretty much painted white, so a yellow house at that time was really a change from the norm in what was then an ultra-conservative community. As Elizabeth's mobility progressively deteriorated (she had MS), the beautiful landscaping was let go and the interior of the house deteriorated considerably. After the death of Elizabeth in 2000, her son, Michael from her first marriage, acquired the property. The house was subject to extensive renovations in 2004 by Elizabeth's son, Michael. Directions from Toronto: Take the Queen Elizabeth Way to Niagara. Just past St. Catharines and the Garden City Skyway, which crosses over the Welland Canal, take Highway 405 west. Exit just before the Queenston-Lewiston bridge. Take the River Road north along the Niagara River to Niagara-on-the-Lake. At the Shaw Festival Theatre, turn right on Wellington Street. Look for the yellow house with the blue door on the corner on Byron Street and Wellington. The driveway is off of Wellington Street. from Buffalo: Take I-190 north to the Queenston-Lewiston bridge. When you have passed through customs and the toll booth, exit immediately to the right. Follow the River Road north along the Niagara River to Niagara-on-the-Lake. At the Shaw Festival Theatre, turn right on Wellington Street. Look for the yellow house with the blue door on the corner on Byron Street and Wellington. The driveway is off of Wellington Street. Site of the old Neutral Indian village of Onghiara, it was settled at the close of the American Revolution by Loyalists coming to Upper Canada, many of whom had been members of the much feared Butler's Rangers based during the American Revolution at Fort Niagara, then under British control. In 1781, the British Government purchased land from the Mississaugas a strip of land 6 miles wide along the western bank of the Niagara River for "300 suits of clothing". By 1782, sixteen families had become established and had cleared 236 acres. In 1791, part of the military reserve at the mouth of the river was chosen as the future townsite. In 1792, Newark, as it was named by Governor Simcoe, became the first capital of the newly-created colony of Upper Canada. The legislature met here for five sessions, until Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe moved the capital to York. By 1796, seventy new homes were built, and the town continued to prosper as the economic, administrative and judicial centre for the Niagara Peninsula. The physical appearance of the town, with the exception of the powder magazine at Fort George, was virtually erased by the burning of the town by the Americans during the war of 1812. Rebuilt, Niagara became an active commercial centre, with a busy shipping and ship-building industry, as well as many shops and warehouses. The beautiful old homes lining the tree-shaded streets attest to the prosperity of its citizens. Today, over two hundred years after its founding, Niagara-on-the-Lake hums with a different kind of traffic. Its many attractions include historic sites: Fort George and the Historical Society Museum, the Shaw Festival with its three theatres, the marina, our heritage business district for shopping, golf courses, parks and beautiful farmland, agricultural markets, and our world famous Niagara wineries. Come to the many special events held throughout the year! Take a carriage ride through the Old Town, or a jet boat up the Niagara River.
